What To Expect

Setting Your First Appointment

You won’t regret it

During the intake process, we will collect general contact information, including personal details, insurance information, and physician references (a referral and prescription from a physician are required). Once we have gathered all necessary information, our dedicated office staff will schedule your appointment. The initial appointment will consist of an evaluation for the selected therapy service to assess your child’s eligibility for therapy. Following this evaluation, an individualized treatment plan will be created for your child..

What To Bring To Your First Appointment

Needed items

During your child’s initial appointment, we will perform a comprehensive evaluation. This visit typically lasts one hour. To facilitate the evaluation process for both you and your child, we have compiled a list of necessary items:

  • Insurance Card
  • Driver’s License
  • Payment for the evaluation (if required by your insurance plan)
  • Copy of the physician’s referral and prescription (unless confirmed received by the front office staff)
  • Copy of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) if applicable (unless confirmed received by the front office staff)
  • If your evaluation is for Feeding Therapy, please bring at least two foods that your child will eat and two foods that they will not eat, as well as at least one beverage that they will drink.
  • Please ensure your child wears comfortable shoes; sneakers are recommended for running and balance activities.
  • Socks are required at all times for interactions within the sensory gym.

Preparing For The Evaluation

Things to consider

To ensure that the evaluation is a positive and productive experience, it is essential for you and your child to arrive well-prepared. Please ensure that your child has had adequate rest and wears comfortable shoes for the evaluation. For health and hygiene reasons, we ask that your child either wears or brings socks for play in the sensory gym. If your child requires glasses or corrective lenses, please ensure they are worn during the evaluation.

We request that a parent or guardian remains present for the duration of the evaluation, which includes standardized testing. However, you may be asked to sit outside your child’s direct line of sight during the testing portion. If you are observing from within the room, it is crucial not to interrupt the standardized testing with questions or attempts to influence your child’s behavior, as this may affect the integrity of the assessment. During the parent or guardian interview, the evaluating therapist will welcome any questions, comments, or concerns you may have while your child is engaged in play, whenever feasible.

What To Expect After The Evaluation

What comes next

Upon completion of the evaluation, your therapist will discuss the necessity of therapy participation and recommend an appropriate frequency (e.g., once per week, twice per week, etc.). As each child’s needs are unique, the written report may take one to two weeks to finalize. Depending on the payment arrangement for the child’s services, therapy may begin the following week, or there may be a waiting period for insurance approval, which typically ranges from two to four weeks. Our front office staff will assist you throughout this process to ensure your child can start therapy services promptly once all insurance requirements are satisfied.
